The Changing of the Guard Tradition
The Household Troops have guarded the Sovereign and Royal Palaces since 1660. When Queen Victoria moved to Buckingham Palace in 1837, the Queen’s Guard continued at St James’s Palace. A detachment now guards Buckingham Palace, maintaining a long-standing tradition.

In London, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh watched the ceremony. In Paris, President Macron observed the parade. On behalf of The King, The Duke and Duchess inspected 32 members of the Garde Republicaine and 40 Scots Guards, lined up opposite their French counterparts.

State Visit to France
Last autumn, The King and Queen visited France. This was their first overseas trip following Their Majesties’ Coronation in May. They were welcomed at the Arc de Triomphe, with a flypast symbolizing the long-standing alliance between the two nations.
The King’s Speech on the Entente Cordiale
At the State Banquet at the Palace of Versailles, The King spoke about the importance of the Entente Cordiale. He said:
“The bonds between our peoples form the very lifeblood of the Entente Cordiale, originally inspired by my great-great-grandfather, King Edward VII. As we approach the 120th anniversary in 2024, we must renew and strengthen our friendship to meet the challenges of the 21st century.”
