Prince Harry Opens Up About ‘Explaining What’s Happened’ With His Kids Archie & Lilibet

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have already started to have serious conversations with their children, educating them on the more important sides of life. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have always stood for humanitarian causes, with Meghan, 43, being an advocate for women’s political participation and leadership at UN Women and a longtime UN Women’s ambassador. Prince Harry, 40, is the founder of the Invictus Games, an initiative of the Invictus Games Foundation which “offers a recovery pathway for international wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women.”

The Invictus Games Tournament is one of the most important causes for war veterans, and Prince Harry – as a war veteran himself – is a strong advocate for the cause, which is very close to his heart. The Duke of Sussex’s intention behind the famous adaptive sports tournament was to offer support “to wounded, injured, and sick service members and veterans.”

Like all parents, Prince Harry and Meghan are ensuring that their legacy carries on in their children by passing on their values of compassion and acceptance of all human beings. With the conclusion of the 2025 Invictus Games in mid-February and Prince Harry and Meghan’s appearances at the events, it would only be natural for their little ones to be curious about the cause. The Duke of Sussex recently opened up about having challenging conversations with his children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, concerning the Invictus Games and wounded soldiers.

Prince Harry revealed in an interview that he had started to have serious and difficult conversations with Archie and Lilibet in the wake of the 2025 Invictus Games. As someone who served in the British army for a decade and went on to create the Invictus Games Foundation, the Duke of Sussex was confident in explaining the circumstances of the Invictus Games participants to his children.

“They are fascinated,” Prince Harry told PEOPLE about the conversations about the Invictus Games with his two young children.

“It’s a very interesting conversation to have with your kids – to explain why that person is missing a leg, why that person is missing an arm, why do they look the way they do. It’s challenging but important.”

He went on to share that despite their young age, his children – particularly his son Archie – were curious about it all and had more questions.

“Our kids are still so young, but Archie, especially, is asking those questions,” the Duke of Sussex remarked. “As any parent knows, once you open that door and those questions are asked, or that conversation starts, more and more doors start opening,” he said, adding, “And then he starts asking, ‘How did they get injured? What’s a mine? What’s all this?’ It becomes opening Pandora’s box, to some extent, especially with kids this age, because they have no filter, and they’re just so curious and so inquisitive! They want to know more, more, more.”

Harry spoke about his son’s never-ending curiosity and his constant hope to explain issues correctly, adding:

“I’m constantly trying to make sure that I get it right, in explaining what’s happened to (the competitors), and what we do at Invictus to try to make their lives better and give them a chance to redefine themselves. And the power of sport.”

Prince Harry is eager to share his stories and experiences with his children, who he hopes will pursue all their passions and dreams.
