A ‘mystery girl’ who went viral for shaking the hands of the victorious Lionesses beside Prince William last night has finally been named.
For those unfamiliar with the internet sensation, a young girl was filmed on the pitch at St Jakob‑Park in Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday (27 July) following the UEFA Women’s 2025 Euros Final.
The nail-biting match saw England’s Lionesses steal victory against fellow finalists Spain in a high-stakes penalty shootout, after which several ambassadors for the female tournament flocked down onto the field.
Amongst them was Prince William, 43 – the patron of England’s Football Association – and his 10-year-old daughter Princess Charlotte.
It was the future King’s responsibility to hand medals out to England’s victors after shaking their hands.
When the special moment was broadcast live, however, spectators couldn’t help but notice a young girl standing beside William and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.
The ‘mystery girl’ was seen shaking the hands of each footballer as they passed by – rather prematurely, we might add, having actually taken the players’ hands whilst they were still attached to Williams’.
As we say, the interaction subsequently went viral, with many wondering who this bold football fan could possibly be.
“The little girl from the #Euro2025 Foundation, stood next to Prince William during the medal ceremony is killing me,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Bless her man, fully trying to cut him out of the handshake proceedings.”
Another noted: “She was fabulous, totally the most thrilled person ever to be there!”
“That girl jumping in front of Prince William to get the handshakes, huge move, she has my respect,” joked a third.
Thankfully, since then, the unnamed youngster has finally been named.
According to German news outlet 20 Minuten, the girl is a 12-year-old Portuguese national named Greta.
The child has reportedly lived in Switzerland for several years, and suffers a genetic variation of epilepsy, having been diagnosed at just six-months-old.
Greta was invited down to the festivities as part of the UEFA Foundation for Children, which sees children battling a series of ailments getting involved in honorary or recreational activities.
This, apparently, includes trophy presentations.
Speaking to press of the youngster’s inclusion at the game, a representative from UEFA told the publication: “Greta is a cheerful, open-minded, and determined young girl with a great passion for sport.
“Her enthusiasm, perseverance, and love of sport made her a fitting and inspiring choice to participate in the medal ceremony alongside UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.”
