Queen Elizabeth II ‘broke royal tradition’ after being served chocolate dessert while overseas

Queen Elizabeth II reportedly fell in love with a chocolate dessert so deeply that she broke a royal tradition for it.

Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite chocolate dessert

According to former royal chef Darren McGrady, who cooked for King Charles and his mother for 11 years, the late monarch favoured British and French cuisine.

But one type of pudding she favoured above all was one with lots of chocolate. Especially, a recipe she asked for whilst on a trip across the globe.

Queen Elizabeth II enjoyed one delightful chocolate pudding so much that she brought the recipe back home with her. Thus, she broke tradition by asking a chef for their secrets.

Recently, in a YouTube video on his channel, Darren explained that the chocolate mousse dessert made such an impression on Queen Elizabeth that she broke tradition just to learn more about it.

Whilst in Australia, the late monarch was invited to a dinner party at Government House in Melbourne.

Her staff were asked what she liked, and they shared that Elizabeth loved chocolate.

How Queen Elizabeth ‘broke tradition’ over chocolate mousse dessert

“When she returned,” Darren explained, “she had brought a recipe with her. They made her a dish called chocolate marquise.

“The queen loved it so much that she asked for the recipe. She never did that!”

He continued: “She wanted the chefs in the kitchen to make this and put it on the menu, so that she could serve it to her guests too.”

It seems Queen Elizabeth II enjoyed the sweet treat so much that she would regularly indulge.

“She is absolutely a chocoholic,” Darren previously told  HELLO . “Anything we put on the menu that had chocolate on, she would choose. Especially chocolate perfection pie.”

Queen Elizabeth’s guilty pleasure

In his book, Eating Royally, Darren previously noted how Queen Elizabeth gave up chocolate at Lent, a period of fasting and reflection followed by the Christian church (of which Queen Elizabeth was the symbolic leader).

To mark the end of the fast, Darren explained how he would go to great lengths to prepare a feast of chocolates for her to indulge in on Easter Sunday. Yum!

Thankfully for the late queen, her birthday always fell after Lent.

To mark it, she would reportedly enjoy a twelve-inch chocolate layer cake covered in chocolate ganache and decorated with “Happy Birthday” in royal icing.

She loved the cake so much she even ate it on both her actual birthday (April 21) and her official birthday (the second Saturday in June).

Prince William’s love of chocolate

Apparently, Queen Elizabeth’s love for cake was something she shared with the Prince of Wales.

HELLO’s Online Royal Correspondent Danielle Stacey explained: “The late Queen was reportedly a huge fan of a chocolate biscuit cake, something she shared in common with her grandson, Prince William, who even requested that the sweet treat be served at his wedding to Kate in 2011.”
