Prince George and Princess Charlotte granted rare ‘exception’ after breaking Wimbledon rule

As members of the Royal Family, it’s no secret that the Prince and Princess of Wales’ children are lucky enough to get a number of perks when it comes to things like events.

And of course, one of the biggest sporting events of the year, Wimbledon, is no different.

On Sunday (13 July), Prince William and Kate Middleton brought their two eldest kids Prince George and Princess Charlotte along with them to watch the men’s singles final.

The dramatic match on the final day of the tennis tournament saw Jannik Sinner take home his first ever Wimbledon trophy, after beating reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz.

And the royals watched the all-important game from the best seats in the house – the prestigious Royal Box.

The box is one of the most exclusive, invite-only, seating areas in sport, and only certain people are eligible to sit there.

Boasting 74 seats, the iconic suite has been used for the entertainment of friends and guests of Wimbledon since 1922.

As well as royals, many famous faces have also graced the box over the years, with some of the most notable this year including Olivia Rodrigo, David Beckham and Hugh Grant.

According to the Wimbledon website, the invite list includes: “British and overseas Royal Families, heads of government, people from the world of tennis, commercial partners, British armed forces, prominent media organisations, supporters of British tennis and other walks of life.”

And those who make it into the exclusive box then have a slew of strict rules and regulations to follow – no matter how famous they are.

The most notable rule is the dress code, which has caught many celebrities out over the years, including Lewis Hamilton and even Meghan Markle.

Guests are expected to wear a jacket and tie or a full suit, while women have to follow a ‘smart attire’ dress-code.

The official website adds: “Ladies are asked not to wear hats, as they tend to obscure the vision of those seated behind them.”

On top of all this, another little-known rule of the Royal Box is that children are generally not allowed to sit there.

The only exception to this is of course, royal children, meaning George and Charlotte were well within their rights to enjoy the best view.

The first year 11-year-old Prince George attended Wimbledon was back in 2022 when he was eight, and similarly, Charlotte was eight when she made her Wimbledon debut in 2023.

It comes as some royal fans have questioned why the couple’s youngest child, Prince Louis, seven, wasn’t with his family at the game.

But, some social media users pointed out that it was likely due to his age and the little one might struggle to sit through the whole match quietly.

Since both of the other royal children were eight when they first attended, it could be that Louis simply has to wait until next year.
