A time capsule that was buried by the late Princess Diana in 1991 and meant to be opened “hundreds of years” later has been unearthed.
The wooden box, which was laid at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London, had to be dug up earlier than expected for the construction of the hospital’s new Children’s Cancer Center. It’s set to be a “national resource for the treatment of childhood cancers, with a focus on research and innovation.”
Included in the time capsule were a photo of the princess herself, a sheet of recycled paper, a copy of Kylie Minogue’s Rhythm of Love (1990) album, British coins, five tree seeds in a bottle, a snowflake hologram, the Times newspaper, a pocket television, a solar-powered calculator, and a European passport.
Diana worked with two children in deciding which items to put in the box 34 years ago.
Hospital staff helped take out the time capsule. Its contents were damaged by moisture but most of them were still intact.
Diana became the president of GOSH in 1989. She visited the hospital multiple times before she died.
She passed away in a car crash in 1997 at 36 years old, leaving many possessions, jewelry, and money to her sons.
