In the era of viral content and constant online scrutiny, no public figure is immune to controversy, especially when that figure is Meghan Markle. The Duchess of Sussex made headlines after sharing a never-before-seen picture of her daughter, Princess Lilibet, who turned 4 on June 4, 2025. Meghan dedicated three separate social media posts to pay tribute to Lilibet on her special day.
The first image broke the internet, as it finally showed Lilibet looking straight into the camera. However, Meghan’s arm covered the bottom of her face, which came as no surprise, as the Sussexes are known for keeping their children’s faces hidden and private from the public and the internet. She captioned the first image:
“Happy birthday to our beautiful girl! Four years ago today she came into our lives – and each day is brighter and better because of it. Thanks to all of those sending love and celebrating her special day!”
This was followed by a picture of Prince Harry holding a newborn Princess Lilibet, looking at her with adoration in his eyes, and a more recent one of Harry and Lilibet walking barefoot and holding hands, presumably at their home in Montecito. Meghan captioned the picture:
“The sweetest bond to watch unfold 💞Daddy’s little girl and favorite adventurer. Happy birthday Lili!”
While both of these pictures received widespread attention on social media, it was a post that came a little later that sparked an online conversation. Netizens were quick to share their opinions on the Duchess’s video birthday tribute to her daughter.
While Meghan’s birthday tributes in 2025 to her daughter, Princess Lilibet, were heartwarming, the last one received mixed reactions. In this tribute, Meghan posted a video of her and Prince Harry dancing in a hospital room. The video was presumably taken just before Lilibet’s birth, as a popular upbeat song played in the background.
“Four years ago today, this also happened. Both of our children were a week past their due dates… so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn’t work – there was only one thing left to do! 😅” Meghan wrote in the .
Although Meghan’s profile did not allow fans to leave comments under the post, netizens still found ways to share their opinions on the post. Many vehemently questioned whether Meghan had even carried Lilibet herself, implying she wasn’t even pregnant at all.
“Nope not buying it! as a woman who has had three, there is no way she was pregnant there,” they [wrote].
Another social media user came to the Sussexes’ defense, responding:
“Ah yes, the ‘I’ve had three kids, therefore I know everything about every pregnancy ever’ brigade. The irony? No mother with an ounce of empathy would post something this vile. I don’t believe you. Not the kids, not the wisdom – and certainly not the dignity.”
Another social media user criticized Meghan and Harry for posting the video to social media, saying they should have kept it to themselves. They wrote:
“They really are a pair of biffs. Why would you even post this! Keep it private!”
A fan of the Sussexes then responded
“Haters would hate this. It would kill off their joy of the rumours they love to spread – that the baby wasn’t of her pregnancy. And most crucially of all – they would just hate that these two are goddamn this happy together. Ain’t no royal restrictions here …oh and no stiffness.”
Despite the criticism, Meghan and Harry certainly showered Princess Lilibet with love on her birthday!
