Prince George Starts at Eton — and One Detail About His New Room Is Getting Everyone’s Attention

Prince George has officially begun a new chapter at Eton College, following in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, and his uncle, Prince Harry.

The 13-year-old future king arrived at the historic boarding school on September 8, 2026, accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales. His move from Lambrook School marks a significant change, as George now begins full boarding life away from his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

But one detail about his new life at Eton has attracted particular attention: Prince George will have his own bedroom.

And surprisingly, it has nothing to do with his royal status.

Prince George Will Have His Own Room

At Eton, every pupil is provided with his own study-bedroom from the beginning of his time at the school.

There are no shared bedrooms.

The arrangement is intended to give pupils privacy and personal responsibility while still allowing them to experience traditional boarding-school life.

George will live in a boarding house with around 55 other boys, supported by a House Master, a Dame and other members of staff.

Although pupils sleep and study in their own rooms, much of daily life is communal. They eat meals together, take part in sports and activities, and spend time with other members of their boarding house.

So George’s private room is not a special privilege for the future king. It is the same arrangement offered to other Eton pupils.

Prince George begins his first day at Eton College in Windsor, Berkshire.

A Major Change From Lambrook

George previously attended Lambrook School in Berkshire alongside Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Eton, however, is a full-boarding school, meaning George will spend much more of each school term living on campus.

Pupils can still return home during designated weekends and school holidays. Eton’s calendar includes certain “B Weekends,” when boys may leave after completing their Saturday commitments and return on Sunday evening.

The school’s location near Windsor also means George will remain relatively close to his family.

Following Prince William’s Footsteps

Prince William began attending Eton in 1995, when he was also 13 years old. Prince Harry followed in 1998.

George’s decision therefore continues a modern royal tradition.

Eton itself has a much longer history. Founded by King Henry VI in 1440, the school has educated generations of prominent figures, including members of the Royal Family and numerous British prime ministers.

George had been widely expected to attend the school before Kensington Palace formally confirmed the decision in 2026.

Will George Face Eton’s Famous “Colours Test”?

Another Eton tradition attracting attention is the so-called “colours test.”

Former pupil and royal historian Hugo Vickers has recalled that new boys were expected to learn the colours associated with the school’s different boarding houses, along with Eton’s unusual terminology and traditions.

Some reports have suggested that George could face a similar challenge.

However, neither Eton nor Kensington Palace has publicly confirmed that Prince George will be required to sit a formal colours test.

It is therefore more accurate to describe it as a longstanding Eton tradition that George may encounter during his introduction to the school.

Sport Will Be a Big Part of Eton Life

Eton also offers an extensive sports programme.

Its facilities include the Athens Sports and Aquatics Centre, featuring a 25-metre swimming pool and a four-court sports hall.

The school also provides facilities for activities including cricket, rugby, football, rowing, swimming, squash, fencing, climbing and martial arts.

Sport forms an important part of everyday life at Eton, alongside academic study and extracurricular activities.

How Much Does Eton Cost?

For the 2026–27 academic year, Eton lists its fee at £21,891 per term, including VAT.

With three terms in the academic year, that brings the standard annual cost to:

£65,673 per year

before additional or optional expenses.

Despite its high fees, Eton is also a registered charity and provides bursaries and educational support programmes.

A New Chapter for the Future King

For Prince George, starting at Eton represents much more than simply changing schools.

He is entering full boarding life, spending more time away from his family and beginning a period in which he will be expected to develop greater independence.

At the same time, he is following a path already taken by his father more than three decades ago.

Yet one part of George’s Eton experience will be exactly the same as it is for every other pupil:

His room will be his own, while the wider boarding house becomes his community.

What do you think about Prince George attending Eton? Do you think the historic boarding school is the right choice for Britain’s future king?
