Prince Harry and Prince William’s rift may not be permanent. But getting the brothers back on speaking terms could require more than a family reunion.
As their five children grow older, a new question is emerging: Can the brothers remain apart without passing that estrangement on to the next generation?
Harry and William may still have a path toward reconciliation, but the circumstances surrounding their relationship suggest there will be no quick reset.

According to a September 9, 2026, report from Us Weekly, British broadcast journalist Sharon Carpenter, former royal butler Grant Harrold, and unnamed sources offered perspectives on what could help repair the divide.
Their accounts suggest that any progress could depend on more than a desire to make peace. Family dynamics, William’s position, and Harry’s choices could all play a role in what happens next.

The Brothers’ Five Children Could Change the Family Equation
Sharon raised the issue while discussing how William and Harry’s relationship could affect their five children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet.
“As the five children get older, there may be a natural desire not to allow an estrangement between two brothers to become an estrangement between cousins,” Sharon said.

She added that the brothers remain connected through the king, their extended family, and major family occasions, circumstances that could become more significant as the next generation grows older.
For now, however, there is no indication that the children will be brought together as part of any effort involving the brothers. “They are leaving the kids out of it,” a separate unnamed source said.

Catherine’s Hope for Peace Comes With Firm Support for William
Catherine’s position shows that wanting a reconciliation does not mean overlooking the tensions surrounding it.
The princess had only recently regained her footing following her cancer battle when Harry and Meghan made what the report described as a surprising move. A second unnamed source said Catherine takes her royal responsibilities seriously and is particularly protective of her role.
The same source said Catherine’s relationship with Meghan “has not improved.”

Still, Catherine reportedly hopes William and Harry can repair their relationship. The first source said she remains focused on her children and work while standing firmly behind her husband.
“She wants William and Harry [to reconcile], but she supports William 100 percent,” the first source said.
For William, however, the stakes extend beyond his relationship with Harry as a brother. Sharon said his future role as king adds another dimension to what would be required for the two to move forward.

What William Needs Before Closeness With Harry Can Return
That dual responsibility leads to the central obstacle between the brothers.
Sharon said William has to consider Harry from two perspectives: as his brother and as the future king. In her view, repairing their personal relationship would depend first on restoring a sense of trust.

Grant offered a more specific picture of what Harry would need to do. He said Harry should avoid publicly criticizing the royal family and steer clear of business deals that could create controversy.
Those expectations put the focus on Harry’s conduct over time rather than a single meeting or peace gesture.

Grant indicated that progress could become possible if Harry’s choices eventually leave William feeling more secure about the situation.
“If Harry proves himself and William feels the situation is safer, things may start to change. But it will all depend on the decisions and choices Harry makes in the coming months,” Grant said.

The first unnamed source also addressed the public mood surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in Britain.
“The [British] public is skeptical, especially about Meghan, but Harry was always a beloved member of the royal family,” the source said, “so there’s a big contingent who welcome him back with open arms.”
There has also been movement elsewhere in Harry’s relationship with the royal family.

According to a report from People, Harry and King Charles III have remained in contact since Harry and his family returned to the U.K., contrary to reports that the father and son had not communicated.
A source told the publication that Harry and Charles spoke by phone during Harry’s first week back in the country. The father and son had not yet met in person since the family’s return.
The reported contact with Charles adds a new development to earlier reports about how William and Catherine were handling the Sussexes’ return to Britain.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived on August 26, ahead of their children’s planned start at school in the U.K., according to the same outlet. Archie and Lilibet are set to begin school in September, though their school and the family’s residence have not been disclosed.
Their arrival also closes some of the physical distance between Harry and William. One source told the publication that being back in Britain offers Harry the “best opportunity” to try to mend his strained relationship with his older brother.

William Reportedly Did Not Expect the Sussexes’ Full UK Return
“Prince William was blindsided,” royal commentator Kinsey Schofield told Fox News Digital. According to Kinsey, Harry’s talk of spending more time in the U.K. had already registered with William, but the decision to move the family back was reportedly unexpected.
“William now has to navigate a situation he did not create, did not ask for and, given the state of their relationship, almost certainly would not have chosen,” she said.

Several royal experts who spoke with the same media source described William and Catherine as “concerned” about the Sussexes’ extended return.
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard said the Prince and Princess of Wales were “feeling uneasy” about another chapter in what she called the “endless Sussex soap opera.” Helena added, “It’s about broken trust.”
She claimed William believes Harry and Meghan spent years attacking the royal institution and then monetizing their grievances through their media operation. In Helena’s assessment, William does not want to fuel or endorse behavior he considers damaging.

Meanwhile, Kensington Palace declined to discuss the matter. “We would never comment on private family matters,” a spokesperson told the outlet.
William’s Balmoral Visit Raised Questions About Possible Family Contact
William and Catherine were at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, visiting Charles as reports about the Sussexes’ return emerged. Reports cited by the outlet said Charles learned of Harry and Meghan’s move three days before it became public.
Royal broadcaster Neil Sean said that Harry and Meghan had not, at that point, been invited to meet privately with the king. He also claimed such a meeting would not happen while William was at Balmoral.

“I’ve been told he has no desire to connect on any level with his younger brother,” Neil said of William. Neither William nor Kensington Palace confirmed Sean’s account.
Archewell, which handles the offices of Harry and Meghan, also declined to address the matter. “We do not comment on the family’s private travel arrangements or meetings with the extended family,” a spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

With both offices keeping private family matters out of their public statements, Prince William and Catherine’s own approach remained unclear.
How the Couple Was Said to Be Handling the Situation
William and Catherine are resisting any “knee-jerk reaction” to Harry and Meghan’s return, a source close to the Prince and Princess of Wales told People for its September 1 cover story.
“They are watching this space,” the source said. “It’s private — they don’t feel the need to say anything or demonstrate anything outwardly.”

Rather than responding publicly, the couple is reportedly waiting to see how events develop. But any reconciliation “will be a slow build,” the source told the publication. “There is a deep sense of betrayal.”
Harry Never Quite Stopped Looking Back
California gave Harry and Meghan the privacy, distance, and room they wanted while Archie and Lilibet were small. It also allowed Meghan to develop her As Ever business, which has further product launches planned.
Yet sources in California said Harry struggled to build a tight social circle of his own in Montecito. Britain still held the old friends and familiar community he could not fully replace, no matter how sunny the weather or enviable the estate.
“Harry never really stopped missing home,” a source close to the couple told People. “He’s missed that sense of connection and belonging. Britain is still home in many ways.”
His remaining patronages also require time in the country. Preparations are underway for the Invictus Games in Birmingham in July 2027, and one source predicted Harry would be “in the weeds on it every day.”
The children were another powerful consideration. Meghan reportedly feels fortunate that Archie and Lilibet can experience life in both California and Britain rather than having to belong exclusively to one world.
Their July 2026 visit offered a preview. Archie and Lilibet reunited with Charles at Highgrove before visiting Althorp, Princess Diana’s childhood home and final resting place, with Charles Spencer, Cat Jarman, and several relatives from Diana’s side of the family.
Harry reportedly wants his children to understand his upbringing and their family history. For a father who lost his mother at 12, allowing them to know Diana’s roots carries an importance that no glossy California childhood could quite duplicate.
The reunion at Highgrove was also the first time Charles had seen Archie and Lilibet in more than four years. An ally of the couple called it “a real positive,” and the King’s continuing cancer treatment makes the sudden reduction in distance especially meaningful.
